SACRAMENTS FOR YOUTH
All sacraments involve a two year process.

Baptism for School Age Youth:  Students who register for First Communion class and have not been baptized are invited into the Rite of Christian
Initiation for Adults adapted for Children (RCIA).  After the completion of their first year of instruction, the students and their parents/guardians
become involved in a year long process culminating in the reception of all three sacraments of initiation.

First Communion:  First Communion and First Reconciliation preparation is usually begun in second grade and completed in third grade.  When
children who are older come for First Communion preparation they are placed in a class of students of similar age.  Days and times for these classes
vary depending on the age of the student.

Confirmation:  Confirmation for our youth begins in high school.  Besides being in high school, students must be 15 years of age by May of their
second year in the Confirmation process.
The Ministry of Faith Formation of Youth provides weekly religious education classes for the youth of our parish attending public schools
from kindergarten through high school.  Over 100 parish volunteers make it possible for us to serve more than 800 students in our classroom and home
study programs.  The school year begins in October and concludes in May.  At the time of registration the parent/guardian must be willing to be
responsible for taking the child to weekly Sunday Mass, helping them learn their prayers and getting their child to class on time.
New student registration occurs at the beginning of August.  If your child is baptized or has received any sacraments, you must bring a copy of their
sacrament certificates at the time or registration.  NO registration will be taken without certificates.

The ministry of catechesis at St. John of the Cross is guided by a biblical faith, a fidelity to the teachings of the Roman Catholic
Church, and a clear vision of the Gospel.  It’s  purpose is to help a person’s “faith become living, conscious, and active, through the light of
instruction”.  While aiming to enrich the faith life of individuals at their particular stages of development, we recognize that catechesis is a
lifelong process of faith formation for each person.
Each year instruction builds on the year or years of earlier instruction.  By high school, students have been exposed to biblical faith, the
teaching of the Church and a clear vision of the Gospel.
Bible Study is also offered every Thursday at 7:00pm in the school’s Media Center.  The following week’s topic is included in the
Bible Quiz of the Sunday bulletin.
Recognizing that all believers are called to grow in discipleship throughout life, St. John of the Cross Catholic Church, provides
opportunities for  lifelong deepening of faith in Christ.

                  Tuesday evenings an
English Adult Class is offered teaching the essentials of our Catholic faith based on the Growing Faith
Project
drawn from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.    These classes are offered from 7:00-8:30pm at St. John of the Cross School in
room 22 (the newest wing).

                  On Saturday mornings 11:00am an
Adult Spanish Class is offered in the Kirk Center based on the Growing Faith Project.
